Another special treat from my husband this fall: a weekend away by myself. We looked for cheaper flights and found that it was fairly reasonable to fly to Denver. My man’s aunt owns a condo up in the mountains. We found that it was available, so we booked the ticket and off I went!
The plane trip went uneventfully. As I went through security I realized that I haven’t flown alone in six years. Boy, it was a treat! Although, I’ve found that people treat you with much more kindness when you have kids with you (for the most part).
After a small (okay, big) frustration with the car rental company, I was on my way. The drive took about 2 hours through the mountains. At one point the fog was so thick that I had trouble seeing in front of me. I do NOT like that feeling, especially when it seems that there is a large drop off on the side of the road. On the way back to the airport Sunday I found out that I had missed some incredible scenery due to the fog. What a surprise to see stunning views where before all I could see was fog!
My ride. More than I planned to get but such a special extra!
I got to the condo, climbed in bed and read until I fell asleep. Heavenly! When I woke up I walked the town twice and then found a place to grab a hamburger. What a truly luxurious day!
The view out my window…see the fall colors? Oh, they made me happy!
Saturday I woke up so early (doesn’t that figure)! But I went back to sleep for a few more hours. When I rolled out of bed I got ready and headed to a ski town a few miles away. I walked through the town for almost 2 hours, taking pictures, buying souvenirs, enjoying the COLD weather! I really wanted to buy some winter hats, sweatshirts, etc, but then I remembered that I live in Texas now, where we’re still having temps in the 80s. So I thoroughly enjoyed the cold this weekend!
A lake between the town I stayed in and the ski town I visited
I drove around, just admiring the gorgeous scenery! Seriously, I am ready to move to Colorado! I love it!
I spent two hours lounging in bed with the covers pulled up while I watched mindless tv. So relaxing! My brother-in-law lives about 2 hours away. Even though his wife was out of town he drove all the way up with their bikes so that we could do some biking and hang out. We rode 8 miles! I’d really like to brag about that, but truthfully, most of the ride was coasting downhill.
After the ride, we went to a restaurant in town and ordered a taco pizza. I have never thought of a taco pizza as appetizing, but it looked good this time, probably because I was really hungry! Let me tell you, this was one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had! It had chicken, black beans, chipotle sauce, cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. So good! I can’t wait to try making it at home.
I spent the evening reading and watching Ohio State beat Nebraska. Again, relaxation at its finest!
Sunset out my window
Sunday morning I took my time getting ready and packed. Then I walked to town to get a hot chocolate and cinnamon roll. I left early to head back to Denver to catch my flight. Along the way I stopped to take pictures of the scenery and to take in the tourist attractions.
Besides the 8- or 9-year-old that never stopped moving and kept hitting my arm, the flight back went quickly and smoothly. I was thrilled to be home with my babies again, but truly, this weekend ranks way up there as far as trips go! I am so thankful for the opportunity I had to get away!
