Doctors

August4

We have been to a doctor’s office three times this week. I know for some people that’s nothing, but for us, it’s a lot. I had my 6-week checkup today. I was going to ask a few questions about the baby at that appointment, but as we got closer it became more apparent that he deserved his own appointment. (My OB is a family doctor, so he’s also the kids’ pediatrician…I love that situation!) The doctor talked to me about colic and torticollis. Torticollis is basically a strained neck. The little guy prefers to keep his neck tilted to one side. I feel that I should have noticed it sooner, but I didn’t. The doctor recommended some stretches and waiting 6 to 12 months. He said we might work with a physical therapist.
My dad had talked to our family’s chiropractor about the baby, and he suggested that it could have been from the stress of the birth. I had thought about talking to a chiropractor, but I didn’t know how serious this really was (or wasn’t). Over the last several days I’ve noticed our baby boy seems more uncomfortable, more fussy. He’s been favoring one side when he nurses, which makes me uncomfortable. It’s been draining to say the least. I finally decided that I wanted to talk to a chiropractor. It’s scary to take your baby for a new procedure or treatment, so I went armed with questions and concerns. I immediately felt at ease. The chiro checked him over and use the same term….torticollis. She did some adjusting, which really upset the baby. You can tell it really bothers him. The part that really encouraged me was that she noticed things that the doctor has never seen (or mentioned, at least). His skull isn’t symmetrical. He’s got some parts that sit differently than the opposite side. She said it’s all something that can be worked on with adjustments. The doctor just wanted to wait another 5 -10 months. I am so grateful I trusted my intuition and took him to the chiro.
I’m not here to discuss or argue the benefits of a chiro vs. a traditional doctor. I fully believe in both of them. In this situation I am going with the chiro.
So, we will be visiting that office three times a week for a little while. It will be expensive. Even though insurance covers it, the co-pay is more than we’re used to because she’s a specialist. But I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make my boy comfortable. I’m praying that we start to see some changes soon. I know his fussiness stems from his discomfort. I can’t wait to get to know my sweet, happy baby boy. I just hope he’s somewhat happier by the time the bill comes in the mail. :)

*It’s been less than 24 hours. He has been less fussy (still fussy, but not as much). He slept well last night. He’s moving his neck so much more. Praying this continues!

Oh, I’m so happy that you found something that seems to be working. When you wrote about his fussiness a little while ago, I wanted to suggest a chiropractor visit, but didn’t want to sound too nosy or bossy. I’ve heard of a couple newborns whose bodies just got stressed out from the birth and were “out of whack” and a few chiropractor treatments later, they were a whole new baby! That has certainly been my experience during this pregnancy. I’m nearly 5 years older than my first pregnancy and this one has been the easiest on my body. I have no backache since visiting the chiropractor…the cost has been well worth it for me & I hope it will be for your little man too!

Oh good! I totally agree with you! Both doctors are very beneficial, but chiropractors are really under-rated, especially for babies and children!
